Upwork X-Ray, 2026-10-22. Hourly jobs, last 12 months, any client country. "Clients paid before" is the median of each client's past average hourly rate.

Advertised vs paid: the gap to know before you bid

They advertise $18/hr. They actually paid $14/hr on average before. That's 22% below what they post. Check a client's past average before you bid. For clients with a history, Upwork shows their average hourly rate paid on the job post, next to their spend. It tells you more about what you'll earn than the budget field.

The biggest gaps, where the posted rate overstates what these clients have paid:

SkillOffered on new jobsPaid before
Ghostwriting$30/hr$15/hr
AI Agent Development$30/hr$17/hr
Machine Learning$30/hr$17/hr
Chatbot Development$25/hr$14/hr
n8n$25/hr$15/hr
Automation$25/hr$15/hr
Zapier$25/hr$15/hr
JavaScript$25/hr$17/hr

Admin work runs the other way: virtual assistant and data entry clients offer $8/hr on new jobs but paid $10/hr on average before, so a slightly higher bid than the posted rate is often realistic.

What hourly rate should a beginner charge on Upwork?

Look at the entry-level median for your skill, not the overall one. The lowest-paying entry-level skills in our data:

SkillEntry-level medianExpert median
Data Scraping$6/hr$22/hr
GoHighLevel$7/hr$22/hr
Shopify$8/hr$25/hr
Email Marketing$8/hr$27/hr
Lead Generation$8/hr$19/hr
Facebook Ads$9/hr$29/hr
SEO$10/hr$22/hr
Social Media Management$10/hr$19/hr

A simple way to set your first rate:

  1. Start near your skill's entry-level median, not far below it. Bidding $3/hr in a $12/hr market signals inexperience more than value.
  2. Win reviews first. The first few contracts matter more for their review than for their pay. Small fixed-price jobs get you there fastest.
  3. Raise your rate after every few good reviews, in steps, until you reach your skill's median offer. Then compare yourself with the “paid before” number of the clients you want.
  4. Pick clients who pay. 38% of jobs come from clients with no verified payment method. A low rate doesn't help if the client never hires.

“Expert” jobs: check the budget, not the label

21% of “Expert” Upwork jobs pay under $15/hr. In some skills it's worse: 63% of Expert data entry jobs pay under $15/hr. The level is a box the client ticks.

Which countries pay most per hour

Ukraine pays Upwork freelancers the most, at $28/hr. The US is 19th, at $20/hr. Median hourly offer, countries with 15+ hourly jobs. Use the client country filter on the dashboard to see it for your skill.
