How to spot risky Upwork jobs before you spend Connects
How many Upwork jobs come from clients with no verified payment, how many of those ever hire, and the checks that filter out fake and dead-end jobs.
Every Connect you spend on a job that never hires is money gone. Most of those jobs aren't scams, just clients who were never going to hire. But scams exist too, and both share the same warning signs. Here is how common they are across 1,004,460 Upwork jobs from the last 12 months, and the checks that catch most of them.
38% of Upwork jobs come from unverified clients
38% of Upwork jobs come from clients with no verified payment method. Upwork can't confirm they can pay yet. 62% of them never hired anyone. “Payment verified” means Upwork has a working payment method on file for the client. It doesn't prove the client is honest, but without it there is no guarantee the client can pay at all, and the hire numbers show it.
| Statistic | Share of jobs |

Red flags on an Upwork job post
- Payment not verified and no hires: the most common combination behind jobs that never hire.
- The client asks to talk on Telegram, WhatsApp or email before a contract exists. Keep everything on Upwork until you're hired: Upwork's payment protection only covers work done there.
- You're asked to pay for training, software, equipment or a “starter kit”. Real clients pay you, not the other way round.
- A budget far above the market for easy work (“$50/hr for data entry”). Compare it with the real rates for the skill.
- Vague jobs with urgent pressure: no clear deliverable, “start today”, and a request for personal or bank details.
- A perfect rating with almost no spend. A 5.0 from one $20 job says little about a client.
The 30-second check before you spend Connects
- Payment verified? If not, skip unless the job is unusually good.
- Hire rate and total spent. A client who hired on half their jobs and spent $1,000+ is a different bet from one with 0 hires.
- Average hourly rate paid. If it's far below the posted rate, expect that, not the posted one.
- Proposals and invites already. 20% of jobs have invites out within minutes. If interviews have started, you're late.
You can also skip this check entirely: free Telegram job alerts can be set to payment verified only and a minimum client spend, so risky jobs never reach you.
If you think a job is a scam
Don't reply off-platform, don't send money or personal documents, and report the job to Upwork with the “flag as inappropriate” option on the job post. If you already sent something, contact Upwork support.
