Vollna alternatives: cheaper, free and phone-first options for Upwork alerts
Vollna bundles Upwork alerts, AI cover letters and auto-bidding from $24 a month. What to use instead, depending on which of those you need.
Short answer: Vollna is three products in one subscription: job alerts, AI cover letters and auto-bidding. The right alternative depends on which one you actually use. For alerts alone, Upwork X-Ray (ours) is free and sends them to Telegram with client filters. For cheap AI help inside the browser, Upwex is $7.99 a month. For auto-applying with a score you control, UpHunt starts at $27. If you use all three parts every week, Vollna is hard to beat on price, and staying is reasonable.
Upwork X-Ray and OLL.E are ours, and we say what they don't do. Facts about the other tools come from their own pages, checked November 6, 2026.

Why people switch away from Vollna
Three common reasons, and each one points to a different tool.
- Paying for cover letters they don't use. Plenty of freelancers write their own proposals and only want the alert. On Essential, part of what you pay is 250 AI letters a month.
- Five filters run out fast. One filter per skill or niche is the natural way to set alerts up. Covering more needs Professional at $62.
- Wanting more control over auto-bids. Some people want a scoring rule they write in plain words before anything is sent in their name.

If you only use the alerts
Upwork X-Ray reads public Upwork jobs as they post for its statistics, so sending the matches costs us little and the alerts are free. You get up to 10 keywords per alert and filters for minimum hourly rate, minimum fixed budget, client countries, minimum client spend ($1k, $10k or $50k) and payment verified only. An AI check reads each match before it is sent. It only sends to Telegram, it doesn't write proposals, and it never connects to your Upwork account. The setup takes a minute; the steps are in free Upwork job alerts on Telegram.
OutBid is another Telegram option with a free tier: unlimited alerts, blurred proposal drafts and 3 lifetime reveal credits. Vibeworker has a free scored feed; its alerts by push, Telegram, RSS and webhook come with Pro at $189 a year.
If you want the AI letters but cheaper
Upwex costs $7.99 a month with 50 AI credits (one cover letter or one job analysis each), or unlimited if you connect your own OpenRouter key. It works as a Chrome extension, so the letter is written where you apply. The trade: no Telegram or Slack alerts on its pages.
If you want auto-apply you can steer
UpHunt scores each job from 1 to 10 against a prompt you write, then applies on the Auto-Apply plan ($89 a month for 50, then $0.40 each). Compare that with Vollna's Auto 50 at $59 before you move: on price alone, Vollna is cheaper for 50 proposals. Our side-by-side of auto-bidders is in Upwork auto bidders, compared.
If you sleep through Telegram
OLL.E, also ours, is a phone app for Android and iOS that calls you or sounds an alarm when a job that fits you arrives, and drafts a bid letter for you to send. It also watches email and messages, which is more than an Upwork alert tool needs to do.
Who should keep Vollna
Freelancers and small teams who use the alerts, the cover letters and the analytics every week. The 14-day trial and the spread of plans are real advantages, and the Professional plan's Slack, Discord and webhooks have no free equivalent in this list.
Vollna or a free alert: a quick way to decide
Look at last month in Vollna. If you sent most proposals by hand and rarely kept an AI letter as written, you were paying for alerts. A free alert covers that. If the letters saved you an hour a day, the $24 is cheap and you should stay, or move to Upwex if the price is the only issue. If you used Auto 50 or above and it brought interviews you would not have found yourself, keep it, because none of the free tools apply for you. Only the middle case, where you used a little of everything, needs a week of side-by-side testing.
Whatever you pick, filter the clients
The tool matters less than the jobs it lets through. In 988,656 jobs we recorded over 12 months, 36% came from clients with no verified payment method, and 65% of those clients had never hired anyone. 36% of all jobs came from clients who never hired. A filter on payment verified and a minimum client spend removes most of that before it reaches you. Which filters do the most work is in Upwork search filters that cut the noise, and the per-skill numbers are on each skill page.
How to switch without missing a week of jobs
Don't cancel first. Vollna bills by the month or the year, so you have time to test.
- List your Vollna filters. Write down the keywords, budgets and client rules in each one. Five filters on Essential usually map to five alerts elsewhere, or to one alert with several keywords.
- Set the same rules in the new tool. On Upwork X-Ray that means up to 10 keywords per alert, plus minimum rate, client countries, client spend and payment verified.
- Run both for seven days. Note which jobs you would really apply to, and which tool showed them first.
- Check what you lose. If you used the AI letters, try writing five proposals yourself and see how long it takes. Some people find the letter was the part they edited most anyway.
- Then cancel. Or keep Vollna, if it won.
One more thing to compare: noise. A tool that sends you three times as many jobs is not three times as useful. Count the alerts you opened and closed in under ten seconds. That number tells you how good the filters are.
Try the free alerts before you cancel
Run it next to Vollna for a week and see which one finds the jobs you actually apply to.
