Upwork search filters: which ones cut the most dead-end jobs
33% of Upwork jobs come from clients with no verified payment. Which search filters remove the jobs that rarely hire, ranked by how much each cuts.
Short answer: turn on payment verified and a client history filter first; together they remove most of the jobs that rarely end in a hire. In the last 12 months, 33% of Upwork jobs came from clients with no verified payment, and 69% of those clients had never hired anyone. Separately, 36% of all jobs came from clients with no hires at all. Budget and “Expert” filters help much less than people think. Start with the client.
Below, each filter is ranked by how much it removes, with where to find it in Upwork's search and in a free Telegram alert. The numbers come from 969,952 public Upwork jobs we recorded in the last 12 months, with the client's history as Upwork showed it when we saw each job.
The filters, ranked by what they remove
| Filter | What it removes | Share of jobs |
|---|---|---|
| Payment verified | Clients with no verified payment method | 33% |
| Has hired before / minimum client spend | Clients who never hired anyone (a spend floor removes more) | 36% |
| Client country | Depends on the countries you pick | 30% to 60% never hired, by country |
| Minimum hourly rate | Jobs below your floor | Depends on your skill |
| Experience level: Expert | Entry and Intermediate jobs | Doesn't guarantee pay: 21% of Expert jobs pay under $15/hr |
Upwork X-Ray, November 6, 2026, last 12 months; countries from 2026-10-29. The first two overlap: many unverified clients also never hired.
The first two filters overlap. That's fine. A client with no verified payment who has also never hired is the least likely to hire you. On their own they remove 33% and 36% of all jobs; most freelancers should run both.
1. Payment verified
On Upwork, a verified payment method means Upwork has a way to charge the client. It is not a promise of a hire, but its absence is a strong signal: 69% of unverified clients in our data had never hired anyone. It varies by skill, and by a lot. Among skills with at least 5,000 jobs, these had the highest share of unverified clients:
| Skill | No verified payment | …of those, never hired | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photography | 53% | 85% | 5,253 |
| Logo Design | 42% | 84% | 29,275 |
| Mobile App Development | 42% | 82% | 11,909 |
| React Native | 39% | 79% | 5,365 |
| PHP | 37% | 73% | 28,139 |
Upwork X-Ray, November 6, 2026, last 12 months.
And the lowest: UGC (25%), Translation (26%), Email Marketing (27%), Proofreading (27%) and AI Agent Development (28%). In the first group? This filter matters most for you.
2. Client history: hires and spend
Clients who have hired on Upwork before hire on about 6 in 10 of their jobs. Clients who never hired are 36% of all jobs. Upwork's search lets you filter by the client's previous hires; our alerts use a minimum client spend instead ($1k+, $10k+ or $50k+), which also leaves out clients with no hires, since they have spent nothing.
Where to set the bar is a trade-off. Set it high and you see fewer jobs, from clients that other freelancers chase too. Set it low and first-time clients slip back in. We can't see who wins each job, so we can't tell you the perfect number. Start at the lowest step. Raise it if you still waste Connects.
3. Budget and rate: useful, but not a quality filter
A budget floor stops you seeing jobs you would never take. That's all it does. It does not filter out first-time clients:
| Budget | From clients who never hired | No verified payment |
|---|---|---|
| Under $15/hr | 30% | 30% |
| $15–30/hr | 42% | 40% |
| $30+/hr | 39% | 38% |
| Fixed $1k+ | 44% | 40% |
Upwork X-Ray, 2026-10-29, last 12 months. Hourly bands are the advertised rate; Fixed $1k+ is a fixed budget of at least $1,000.
Bigger fixed-price jobs come from first-time clients more often, not less. Check the table. Set the rate floor at what you would really accept, and let the client filters do the screening. Also remember that clients advertise more than they paid before: $18/hr offered against $14/hr paid on average. The gap for your skill is in Upwork hourly rates by skill.
4. Client country
Country moves the odds more than budget. Look at the spread:
| Client country | From clients who never hired | No verified payment |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 30% | 32% |
| United Kingdom | 30% | 32% |
| Netherlands | 30% | 32% |
| Canada | 33% | 34% |
| Germany | 33% | 31% |
| Australia | 34% | 32% |
| United Arab Emirates | 39% | 37% |
| Pakistan | 49% | 41% |
| India | 60% | 56% |

A country filter is also how you match time zones and language. Upwork's search has a client location filter; the alert form takes up to 40 countries, with quick picks for “UK, Canada, Australia” and for Europe. Which countries pay most per hour is covered in the rates post, and hire rates per country in do Upwork clients actually hire.
5. Experience level
“Expert” is a label, not a price. 21% of Expert jobs pay under $15 an hour, and the median Expert offer is $28/hr. If you filter on Expert to find better pay, add a rate floor as well, or you will still see low offers.
Setting it up once
Set them once. Then leave them alone. Here is where each one lives:
| Filter | In Upwork's job search | In an Upwork X-Ray alert |
|---|---|---|
| Topic | Search box and category | Up to 10 keywords, matched in title or description |
| Payment verified | Client info filter | "Payment verified only" |
| Client history | Client history filter (previous hires) | Minimum client spend: $1k+, $10k+, $50k+ |
| Client country | Client location filter | Up to 40 countries, with presets |
| Pay | Hourly rate and fixed-price ranges | Minimum hourly rate, minimum fixed budget |
| Experience level | Entry, Intermediate, Expert | Not a filter; use a rate floor |
Upwork's filter panel changes from time to time; the labels here are a guide. See Upwork's help center for the current options.
Upwork's own filters work while you are on the search page looking, whereas an alert applies the same filters to every new job the moment it posts and sends you only what passes, with an AI check on top of the keywords. Picking those keywords well is its own topic: see Upwork job search keywords. For a check you run on a single job before you bid, read how to spot risky Upwork jobs.
