Are Upwork Connects worth it? Which jobs to spend them on
Upwork charges Connects to send a proposal. What a Connect costs, which jobs waste them most often, and a short routine to follow before you spend them, from 988,656 real jobs.
Short answer: Connects are worth spending on jobs where the client has hired before and has a verified payment method, and a poor bet on jobs where neither is true. Upwork lists a Connect at $0.15 each, and the number a job needs varies and is shown on the job post. We can't see Connects in our data, so we can't tell you what a proposal costs on average. What we can count is how often the jobs behind them lead nowhere: 36% of jobs come from clients who have never hired anyone.
What a Connect costs
Upwork's own Connects Calculator prices a Connect at $0.15, and its help article says the number needed varies by job and can change while the job is open. So a proposal can cost very little or a few dollars. For scale, here is what it adds up to if a job asks for 8, 12, 16 or 20 Connects, and what you would spend on 36 jobs from clients who never hired, out of every 100 picked at random:
| Connects a job asks for | Cost of one proposal | Cost of 36 proposals to clients who never hired |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | $1.20 | $43.20 |
| 12 | $1.80 | $64.80 |
| 16 | $2.40 | $86.40 |
| 20 | $3.00 | $108.00 |
An illustration with round numbers, not an average: we don't have Connects prices in our data. $0.15 per Connect is Upwork's listed price.
A bidder who sends 100 proposals to jobs picked at random, at 16 Connects each, spends $240.00. About $86.40 of it goes to clients who never hired anyone. Small amounts, until you multiply them by every week.
Where Connects go to waste
| Warning sign | Share of jobs | Jobs checked |
|---|---|---|
| Client has never hired anyone | 36% | 988,656 |
| No verified payment method | 36% | 988,656 |
| …and the client never hired anyone | 65% | 988,656 |
| Invites already out minutes after posting | 21% | 988,656 |
Upwork X-Ray, 2026-10-29. Last 12 months, any client country. The first three overlap, so don't add them up.
The first two signs overlap heavily: clients with no verified payment are mostly clients with no hiring history. The fourth is about timing, not the client. When 21% of jobs already have invites out minutes after posting, a proposal sent hours later may arrive after the client has already picked people.
A bigger budget doesn't make Connects safer
| Budget | Jobs from clients who never hired | No verified payment | Invites already out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $15/hr | 30% | 30% | 22% |
| $15–30/hr | 42% | 40% | 19% |
| $30+/hr | 39% | 38% | 18% |
| Fixed $1k+ | 44% | 40% | 16% |
Last 12 months, any client country.
The jobs with the biggest fixed budgets (44% from clients who never hired) are riskier on paper than jobs under $15 an hour (30%). A large number in the budget field is not a reason to spend more Connects. It is a reason to check the client harder. See the hire rate by country and budget for the full picture.
A routine before you spend Connects
- Payment verified? If not, skip it or move it to the bottom of your list.
- Has the client hired or spent before? A client with a history hires on about 5 in 10 of their jobs.
- Does the budget match what this client paid before? Across all skills, clients advertise $18/hr and paid $14/hr before.
- Is the job still new? Send the best proposals in the first hour.
- Does it fit your skill? Apply where you can show you have done this work before.
Checks 1 and 2 can run on their own: in a free Telegram alert you can set “payment verified only” and a minimum client spend, so the jobs that reach you have already passed them.
So, are Connects worth it?
If you choose jobs with the routine above, a few dollars per proposal is cheap next to even a small contract. If you send a proposal to nearly every job you see, a good share of what you spend goes to clients with no history. The Connects aren't the problem. Spending them without checking is.
