Upwork statistics 2026: what 1.5 million real jobs show

How many Upwork clients actually hire, what they advertise vs what they pay, how many jobs come from unverified clients, when jobs post and which skills are growing. From 1.5 million job posts.

By the Upwork X-Ray team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Data: 1.5 million Upwork jobs, Jul 2025 – Oct 2026

Most “Upwork statistics” pages repeat the same company figures from annual reports. This one is different: it counts the jobs themselves. Since Jul 2025 we have read every Upwork job post we could see, 1,587,175 jobs by October 2026, and these are the numbers that matter if you freelance there.

Upwork X-Ray, 2026-10-22. Last 12 months, any client country. Rates are medians, so a few huge jobs don't skew them.

1. A third of Upwork jobs come from clients who never hired anyone

36% of jobs are posted by clients with no hire on their record. That isn't automatically bad, everyone starts somewhere, but it changes the odds. Clients who have hired before hire on 5 in 10 of their jobs; the rest close or expire with nobody hired. If you pay Connects for every job, the client's history is the first thing to check.

2. 38% of jobs come from unverified clients

38% of Upwork jobs come from clients with no verified payment method. Upwork can't confirm they can pay yet. 62% of them never hired anyone. Payment verification doesn't make a client good, but its absence is the strongest single warning sign we see. More in how to spot risky Upwork jobs.

3. 1 in 5 jobs is “taken” within minutes

20% of Upwork jobs already had invites out when we saw them, minutes after posting. The client picked people before most freelancers saw the post. 6% were already interviewing. Those clients were already talking to freelancers before most people had seen the post. Speed matters, which is why free job alerts are worth setting up.

4. Clients advertise more than they have paid before

They advertise $18/hr. They actually paid $14/hr on average before. That's 22% below what they post. Check a client's past average before you bid. The gap is widest in AI, automation and machine learning work. It runs the other way in admin work: data entry clients offer $8/hr and paid $10/hr before. Rates by skill are in Upwork hourly rates by skill.

5. “Expert” doesn't always mean expert pay

21% of “Expert” Upwork jobs pay under $15/hr. Median Expert offer: $28/hr. Entry level: $12/hr. The experience level is a box the client ticks, not a budget.

6. Jobs post Monday to Wednesday, late afternoon UTC

Most Upwork jobs post Mon–Wed, 4–7pm UTC. Monday (16.8%) and Tuesday (17.3%) are the busiest days, Saturday (10.4%) the quietest. 26% post while you sleep (11pm–7am). Converted to your time zone in the best time to apply on Upwork.

7. Where the work is: the biggest skills

SkillJobs (last 12 months)Median hourly offerTrend (3 months)

WordPress55,870$21/hr-23%
JavaScript49,187$25/hr-18%
Content Writing43,641$18/hr-6%

Jobs are counted once per skill tag, so a job tagged both Web Design and WordPress counts in both.

8. Growing and shrinking skills

Trend is each skill's share of all jobs in the last 3 months against the 3 months before, so it isn't fooled by how many jobs we happened to see. Skills with at least 2,000 jobs:

Read this as a direction, not a verdict: a skill down 20% on Upwork can still have thousands of jobs a month. Is it still worth it? See is Upwork worth it in 2026.

9. Which countries pay most

Ukraine pays Upwork freelancers the most, at $28/hr. The US is 19th, at $20/hr. Median hourly offer, countries with 15+ hourly jobs. The biggest markets sit near the middle of the list.

How we got these numbers

Upwork X-Ray reads public Upwork job posts as they appear (about 3,000 a day) and keeps each job's budget, skills, client country, the client's past spend, hires, average hourly rate and payment verification, and the proposals, invites and interviews shown when we saw it. Rates are medians, and everything covers the last 12 months unless stated. Every answer on the dashboard says how many jobs it is based on, and you can filter it by client country, budget and period.
